In an interview with Eurogamer, Sony have claimed that they are “pleased” with sales of LittleBigPlanet and that “Sackboy hasn’t even hit his stride yet.”

In the face of high-profile releases such as Fallout 3, Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War, LittleBigPlanet hit the upper echelons of the UK sales charts at number four last week, before kamikaze-diving out of the top ten, all the way to number nineteen in week two, being outsold by the likes of the dire Wii Music and the two year old Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training for the DS.

Sony UK’s spokesperson went back to the old adage of touting review scores with the comment “We’re really pleased with the initial reaction to LittleBigPlanet, which has been our highest scoring game ever, I believe, with a Metacritic score of 95 per cent and a huge list of 10/10s or 100 per cent scores. We are also pleased with its commercial performance.”

“In other times of the year [the game] would be a clear number one, so you have to put the chart in context. This is an incredibly volatile time of year and the chart reflects that.”

Here’s an alternative suggestion: Parents aren’t buying it for their kids for Christmas because they have NO IDEA what it is, and folks aren’t buying it for themselves because of the masses of server issues that have been persistent since day one. Maybe a release at a different time of the year would have been a better idea? And you can’t really use “the game would be number one in March if we released it then”, since the EIGHTEEN titles above LittleBigPlanet in the chart all seem to be selling well enough…
