Each game will be released as a standalone package over the service, with the games interacting with each other through the player’s “Game Room”, which can be decorated with items that are won through the games. The releases are expected to start in the Spring, and Connect Four will also be added to the roster. Now that has to be better than a bunch of crosswords, doesn’t it?

Its not been the best of times for UK developers of late, and the trouble looks set to continue. Oxygen Studios has been put up for sale and has ceased all internal development projects, it has been revealed.

The company, who were responsible for some of the absolute worst travesties to ever hit the Wii and DS, employed just 14 staff, and is “moving back to a more traditional publisher model using external development teams only.”

Oxygen released My Make-Up, My Dress-Up, My Secret Diary, Cheggers’ Party Quiz, Alan Hansen’s Sports Challenge, Hurry Up Hedgehog and the dire PDC World Championship Darts over the last 12 months or so. is the credit crunch really to blame?

They can’t make up their minds, and the first Official UK All Formats chart of 2009 sees FIFA swapping places with Call of Duty: World at War AGAIN to take the number one spot.

Elsewhere, Guitar Hero: World Tour continues its rise as it climbs from number 7 to number 4 on the back of some heavy discounting in the January sales. Far Cry 2 heads back into the top ten at number 7 for the same reason, whilst restocks of Wii Fit see it bolster its position and head up to number 20 from 33.

The only new entry on the chart is Nintendo’s ambitious 100 Classic Book Collection for the DS, which enters at a lowly number 27. Big Beach Sports, Tiger Woods 09, Midnight Club: LA, Call of Duty 4 and Mario Kart DS all re-enter the chart without causing much damage.

You can check out the current All Formats chart over at our UK gaming charts section, as well as being able to view the full individual charts each and every week.

Eurogamer is reporting that Sony have confirmed to them that a pre-release demo of Killzone 2 will be made available to European players, via the PSN - if it clears the quality assurance process in time. No firm date has been given for the game’s release in Europe, but Sony has confirmed that it will hit in February, meaning that the demo shouldn’t be too far away.

In the US, gamers have to pre-order the game from GameStop to get their hands on the demo, but will be able to get hold of it with no strings attached once the game has released.

Epic supremo Mark Rein has posted details of another patch to Gears of War 2, and the good news is that it should be available to download before the end of the month.

The update will fix bug and exploits for online multiplayer, including invisible shields, infinite Lancer ammunition and melee striking through walls. In addition, penalties for quitting matches early will be increased, and grenade and chainsaw attacks will be less likely to kill you off as you respawn. As if that wasn’t enough, some new achievements for December’s map pack are being added.

Head on over to the Epic Games forums for the full skinny.

After last year’s release of Treasure’s classic Dreamcast shoot-em-up - Ikaruga - to the Xbox Live Arcade, it seems that Microsoft wants more. Treasure CEO Masata Maegawa told Gamasutra that Microsoft have requested that the company gets down and dirty with a Sega Saturn classic - Radiant Silvergun.

But the developers aren’t so sure. Maegawa said: “We’re thinking about it, certainly, but it’s not as simple as just saying, ‘OK, let’s put it up.’ I mean, sure, with Ikaruga, we released it as-is without having to do or add a great deal to the game, and it was popular and well accepted for what it was. But if you play Radiant Silvergun nowadays, it’s certainly aged in assorted ways, and I’m not sure they’re all good.”

So, they haven’t ruled it out, but we’d be surprised to see this one hitting Microsoft’s online service any time soon. Shame.

You’ve all been waiting with baited breath, but Capcom has taken the covers off its triple-A first quarter lineup.

British gamers will be able to get their hands on Street Fighter IV on 360 and PS3 on February 20th, whilst the lacklustre-looking Wii version of Dead Rising (subtitled Chop Till You Drop) hits on the 27th. March 13th brings you one of the most anticipated titles of recent memory - Resident Evil 5.

The full lineup is as follows:-

Flock (Xbox Live Arcade / PlayStation Network) - February (To be confirmed)
Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3) - February 20th
Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop (Wii) - February 27th
Neopets Puzzle Adventure (Wii / DS / PC) - February 27th
Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3) - March 13th
MotoGP (Wii) - March (To be confirmed)
Bionic Commando (Xbox Live Arcade / PlayStation Network) - March (To be confirmed)

That’ll do to be going on with, I think!

The demo of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed comes in at number nine for example, but the full game isn’t listed. The same can be said of Mirror’s Edge and Too Human. I guess that just goes to show that demo versions are more useful to the gamer than to the publisher…

2008 Xbox 360 Top Live Titles

The XBLA chart chucks some decent action our way too, with the awesome Castle Crashers taking the top spot, followed by Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 and the fantastic Braid. Good games, good sales - there isn’t much logic required to work that one out, is there?

So, you’ve graduated up through the levels on Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero: World Tour, and you’re at the point where you think that you could probably take on the real thing and do pretty well. Kudos to you. If you’re a pessimist, then I suggest you don’t watch this latest YouTube post from Andrea Varducci (aka “Vadrum”), since you’ll break down and realise that there’s only one way to ever become as good as this - and that’s to sell your soul to the devil.

The man has some serious skills, and attacks the classic Super Mario Brothers 3 theme tune on an awesome kit. Andrea could, quite probably, make the world turn in the opposite direction just by hitting a continuous rhythm on his hi-hat. Watch. Be amazed. We’ll see you Monday.

Hang on just a minute…

The Telegraph is reporting that toddlers could be checked for speech problems after ‘evidence that many are so addicted to television and video games that they are failing to learn basic communication skills.’

Despite the ironically incorrect English in that sentence, the report goes on to state that the “decline of the traditional family meal time” and the “long-hours culture in the parents’ workplaces” are also to blame for the problem, which apparently will result in two-year-olds being screened for speech deficiencies by the government as part of standard medical checks by health visitors.

The Daily Mail chimed in, stating that ‘fewer than one in ten children in disadvantaged areas know even one nursery rhyme.’ I’m having difficulty imagining a Daily Mail researcher or writer even considering visiting a disadvantaged area to check, but we get their drift and they have stated that “experts” said it, so it really is OK.

Tory MP John Bercow is the man behind the report, and he has called on parents to strike a balance between screen-based activities such as television and computer games and family activities. Of course this makes absolute sense, but the Telegraph saying that “many are so addicted to television and video games” simply doesn’t, considering the statement: “many are left alone with nothing to do other than play video games or watch television” could also be applied. Put a child in a room with an Xbox 360 and a TV, and there’s a high percentage chance that he or she will be watching TV or playing a game when you come back in five hours. That doesn’t mean that they’re addicted. It means that they’re not being given enough attention. Mr. Bercow is to be applauded for the balanced nature of the study and the way in which its recommendations are presented, where The Telegraph are to be booed off stage for the idiotic way in which they’ve leapt to make the problem the fault of the games industry. Again.

I should imagine that video games could only help the vocabulary, when compared to utter, utter rubbish such as Britain’s (still) favourite children’s programme - Teletubbies, where approximately 95% of the show consists of grunts, squeaks and the type of guttural bastardisation of the English language that usually occurs after several pints of strong alcohol. When you consider the sort of absolute and utter nonsensical diabolicalities that are stored in the majority of the country’s “sent messages” folder on their mobile phone, you could again argue that video games will probably help when it comes to improving literacy and speech skills.

It can all be summed up in one perfectly normal English sentence. “Telegraf am cry.”

But, we’ll go with it for now as stranger things have happened. Xbox360Fanboy.com have been ferreting away to dish the trademarking dirt, and have found that Sega have re-registered the ChuChu Rocket name - amongst others. To some, this means that Sega are obviously getting ready to re-release the game on Xbox Live Arcade, and not just trying to protect an IP which reached almost every single UK-based Dreamcast owner thanks to the company giving it away free to anyone who went to their website via the Dreamcast’s browser.

We’ll keep an eye on it. It sure would be good to get some ChuChu going on, even if 90% of the known population didn’t understand what the hell you had to do in the game to win.

Everyone loves a laugh, and this kid just made me actually cry. Probably the most obvious fake reaction ever has been captured on camera for the World to laugh at and well…I’m just helping that along.

If your child didn’t go THIS nuts, then you should take their Wii back to the store and replace it with about 90 litres of Sunny D. Note: Turn your speakers down if you value your ears.

I’m waiting for the follow-up video, where the kid opens his next package to find a copy of My Horse and Me 2 or SPRay or…well…any Wii game not published by Nintendo, it seems.

Dengeki Online have put together their annual Japanese bestsellers list and to be frank, the results aren’t particularly surprising. One PS3 title in the top 30, three PS2 titles and the rest of the chart completely owned by the DS, Wii and PSP. Nine of the top ten are Nintendo-based titles but - funnily enough - not that coveted number one spot, which falls to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G for the PSP.

So, looks like the PSP is selling SOMEWHERE.

All you need is an old wireless router, a free bit of downloadable software, some sticky-backed plastic and an empty Fairy Liquid bottle. OK, maybe not the last two.

I shall be trying this later and that’s for darned sure. Check out the full guide here.

If that doesn’t make your new year, then I’m not surprised - but it really is a nice piece of work by the chaps at TRC to make it available to all. Well done, folks.

You can download the whole nine yards in several pack styles (including the super-sweet 198mb “Deluxe Pack”) from here for absolutely nix.

After FIFA’s Christmas chart success last week, Activision’s Call of Duty: World at War has returned to the number one spot in the last weekly UK games chart of 2008.

FIFA holds on to the number 2 spot, whilst the fatally flawed Need For Speed: Undercover jumps up to three, taking over from Mario Kart Wii, which falls to four. Wii Play rounds off the top five after moving up one place.

Elsewhere, Guitar Hero: World Tour seems to have gotten its Christmas on, as it leaps into the top ten at 7, whilst Sonic Unleashed slides into the number 10 spot from last week’s number 20. The sales are kicking in too, it seems, as Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (which has been aggressively discounted by more than one retailer) re-enters the chart at 17, whilst New Super Mario Bros. and The Simpsons Game return to the chart at 36 and 40, respectively.

You can check out the full All Formats chart, as well as the individual format charts over at our interestingly-named Charts section.

No, you haven’t heard the last of the former-attorney.Our man Thompson has written a cracking letter to Take Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick. And it wasn’t to congratulate him on having such an awesome name.

The letter states that “God is not amused” with Take Two (because it continues “marketing and selling its Mature-rated games to minors”) and that this is why the company’s stock has dropped from $26 to $7 per share. It wouldn’t be anything to do with the company fending off a takeover bid from EA now, would it? No, no.

The rest of the letter is just as ridiculous, so without further ado we give you…Jack Thompson. Who is now just a man in the street, given that he’s been debarred.

“As you will recall, when we met in New York for a couple of hours on May 15, 2007, I mentioned to you that unless Take-Two cleaned up its corporate act (stopped marketing and selling its Mature-rated games to minors), there would be a wicked price to pay.

Since then Take-Two’s stock has gone from $26 to $7+ per share. I think God has put the world together in such a way that your company’s wrongdoing has made this fiscal reckoning unavoidable. Scripture says so.

I have been your company’s and its shareholders’ best friend in all this since I appeared on 60 Minutes in the spring of 2005, but you chose to characterize me as your company’s enemy, pledging to destroy me, and now the piper is being paid. God is not amused.

The harm you and your agents have done to me is predictable, as Jesus told his disciples: “The world hates you because it first hated me.” I’ll be fine, as God promises that “All things work to the good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.” I am called, are you? Jesus says, “I knock on the door, and anyone who answers, I will come in.” Jesus, the Jewish Messiah, calls you even now.

Please repent of your company’s sins. God will reward both it and you.

Shalom, Jack Thompson.”

It’s like watching a car crash in slow-motion. Somebody, please…get the man some help. “All things work to the good for those who love the Lord”, apparently. Does that include denying gamers - who are legally allowed to play M-rated titles - the enjoyment of actually playing them? Is that a good thing? If you want to run with quotes, then I’ll stick with Pericles of Athens when he said “All good things should flow into the boulevard.”

Grand Theft Auto is a good thing, if you’re the right age. By demanding a total ban and blaming the publisher rather than the parents who don’t give two hoots about what their children are playing because they either put it down as “just a game” or hell, don’t actually give two hoots about what their children are doing, you’re overlooking the problem entirely, Jack.
