When EA first announced Rock Band Unplugged for the PSP, I feared the worst. How on earth would they possibly recreate the awesome experience that is Rock Band, on a handheld console? We’ve already seen Guitar Hero repeatedly get it almost right on the DS, but that’s an indirect port featuring just the lead guitar. How do you do drums on a PSP? And vocals?

I didn’t WANT to do it. In fact, I swore that I’d limit my Peggle time to quick bursts of the iPod version when on the train, lest I become addicted. Every time the Xbox Live Arcade edition was mentioned, I’d cover my ears and pretend that I was in my happy place. Then, Josie from Level256.co.uk told me that everything would be alright, and that I could see it through.
2009 is most certainly the year where the fitness game begins to gain a little maturity and – given the success of Wii Fit – Nintendo are more than happy to ride that cash piñata for as long as they can. Their latest offering is Walk With Me, a package that monitors how many steps you take on a daily basis.
Well, it seemed silly to split things up when they’ve been foisted onto retailers’ shelves pretty much at the same time and with both titles supporting the new Wii MotionPlus add-on, a head-to-head seemed like fun.
Being a long-time fan of EA’s golfing titles – way back to the original days of PGA Tour on the Megadrive – I was expecting the addition of MotionPlus to the already relatively solid Wii version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour to be something of a revolution. I wasn’t too far wrong.
I love me some Virtua Tennis and that’s no secret. It was probably my favourite arcade-to-console port back in the days of the Dreamcast, and every time I’ve seen an arcade cabinet with it running in the last twelve years, I’ve just had to have a go – despite completing most of the home versions. It isn’t every day that a game takes a slightly political standpoint, or tries to right a wrong or change an attitude towards a class or race of people but ultimately, despite being a relatively mediocre title, Velvet Assassin does just that.
